JE SUIS PREST 

The well known motto of the Clan Fraser, meaning “I am ready.” It shows the ability of the clan to be ready to face any adversary whenever the moment should arise.

It’s of course more than being physically ready, it’s about getting your mind and soul in the right place for whatever the fight may be that matters to you.  In Outlander, it’s the Jacobite rising.  It’s based on the need of religious and cultural freedoms, which ultimately comes down to simply wanting a separate and distinct identity from the English.

Unfortunately, I think a lot of us can identify with this rebellion as of late.  Like Claire displayed when first transported to the 18th century, it’s easy to remove yourself from the humanity of a situation until you’re immersed in it.  The cause she initially thought was useless and foolish, she grew to feel quite strongly about.  She understood that such an oppressive presence of the British is what ultimately bred such an uprising.

Claire didn’t understand why Dougal was so political, like many Americans today.  But the fact of the matter is, being political is not a choice when your life depends on it. 

It’s not the same, but I’ve learned to really understand how the Scots felt.  Two weekends ago a dark cloud descended upon me.  I went through all of my identifying records (birth certificate, marriage license, my son’s birth certicate) and took photos of them to keep on my phone should I be detained by ICE.  This is the sad reality of being brown in America right now.  If you have the ability to not have this fear, I just ask that you think of your community members that don’t have that same privilege.  And to those of you who are speaking up, I see you and I appreciate you more than you will ever know.  We will get through this.  We have to.
